The dictionary says a palimpsest is something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. In the stained glass tradition many times only parts of windows remain- a face, heraldry, decorative leaves, words. So sometimes in restoring windows craftspeople take wht they have and add new stuff or add more old stuff from a different source. Sometimes windows are made entirely of leftover parts.
